Accelaration Problem

Hi, I have an ID4 GTX Max that was delivered in September 2023. I have noticed an issue when accelerating after decelerating but not coming to a complete stop where the car doesn't respond for 2 - 3 seconds when the accelerator is pressed. This is has left me in some dangerous positions on roundabouts, at junctions and on the motorway.

It has been into the VW retailer who cannot find anything wrong- they told me to bring the car in when it next happens. I advised them that it happens multiple times on the same day so this wasn't helpful.

I have an open ticket with VW UK with regards to this as I believe it is a safety issue but wondered if anyone else has had this problem. VW UK have told me to take it for a second opinion at a different approved service centre - this is somewhat awkward as all my local ones are the same dealership - I also think I will get the same response.

Same with me.
VW ID4 2022 RWD (77kw); delivered 12/2022; driving in Cyprus
In my case, the issue happened multiple times during the summer. After September 2023, it happened only once in Dec; I was driving rather aggressive when it happened!
I reported to the dealer both on the 1st service 08/2023 (15k Km) as well as on Jan 2024 (30k Km), but they could not find anything

I have experienced the same problem which occurs mostly at roundabouts or junctions. My car is with the VW dealer for the third time and they have now contacted VW technical for assistance. The difficulty is that it happens intermittently and annoyingly not when you want it to, so its hard to demonstrate to the service team.
I hope VW come up with some answers to our problem and its reassuring to know and have evidence of it not being a one-off. This is definitely a safety issue and my wife refuses to drive the car until its resolved.
I will keep you posted.

This is quite worrying - I have a lease car and it has been into the dealer twice who cannot find any fault. I can replicate this but may take a few attempts at junctions/roundabouts. I suspect it is the same problem they had in the USA where there was some kind of software defect that was causing it - something to do with the high voltage/pulse inverter.

VW are now saying that they need the car longer but currently are not able to provide a replacement vehicle - it seems this might run into months.

I understand your concerns and can empathise with you. My car is a First Edition 77kw, 2021 model which I have had from new. It is now 2-1/2 years old and the first two years it never did this. I believe it was after a software update that it first occurred. I wasn't aware they had this problem in the USA, but glad you brought it to my attention. My dealership has given me a courtesy car while they try to resolve the issue. It only happens intermittently and has not been so easy to replicate, although one day it did it 5 times. Other days it does not happen at all. I will have a look at the USA forums and thanks for the heads up. I will keep you informed if they find the solution.

I have the same as you in terms of it being intermittent. I think I can replicate It with around town driving as this is when It tends to occur. It is now booked back into VW on the 14th February so they can check it again. I am not optimistic about them finding anything.

I will also come back once they have looked at the car.

My car has just been in VW the past three days. They have been discussing the car with the technical team in Germany and have concluded that it does not have a fault. I am not sure what to do now as it is still happening intermittently but they don't seem to want it accept any problem.

The only good thing is thet fixed the panoramic sunroof and are waiting on a part to fix it.

Hi Dirtynes

Sorry for the delay. My car was in with the dealer (Specialist Cars in Aberdeen) for around 2-1/2 weeks (I had a courtesy car). They managed to replicate the problem but only once. They tried a few things which they were unsure if it had helped, so we agreed I would take the car back and drive it to see if it had improved. Unfortunately it continued to affect the acceleration. They asked me if I would allow them to fit a dashcam to view the surrounding area when it happened. We downloaded three good videos of it happening from the SD card and they did a full scan of the car. The scan showed no faults. They have now forwarded the video to VW and I hope to hear from them this coming week. I have to add that I am conversing with the Workshop Foreman who is the top guy on the electric cars and he has been very patient. He came with me in the car previously and experienced it himself, so recognizes there is a problem.

I will keep you posted when I hear back.

Thanks TF medic

That is really useful to know. The local garage accepted that there was an issue but could not identify the cause so returned the car to me. I am still discussing with VW UK who keep insisting on another option from a different garage which I don't think would serve much purpose.

Let me know when you get a response please.

Hi Nick

Just an update for now, the dealer have booked my car in again for 15th April, the delay being due to availability of a courtesy car. I think VW wanted him to close the issue, but have now reluctantly agreed to keep it open. The plan is to try and get a live data trace on the network on my car, but the system is limited to 10 minutes at a time, due to the file size. This means it needs to be restarted every 10 minutes, which is not that practical because we don't know when it will happen.

You mentioned that you could replicate it, any chance you could share how to do that?
